Rodney's Burton roots are in East Sussex, England where the family were predominantly agricultural labourers. Members emigrated to South Australia and to New York.

Rodney was born in Adelaide, South Australia and spent time at university, secondary teaching and as a project manager. He is now retired.

Ruth's Stoneham family were stone masons centred on Garsdon in Wiltshire. Stonehams still live nearby and in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Ruth was born in Renmark, South Australia and is a secondary teacher in Adelaide, South Australia.
